Today, I’m sharing my second fashion trend report for the year – the wearable fall fashion trends for 2023! I generally report the latest in fashion trends every spring and fall. Usually, the fall trends seem to generate the most excitement making it difficult to cover everything in just one post. So this year, I’m putting out three different trend reports. This first installment focuses on clothing and a few accessory trends. Next, I’ll do one on fall shoes. And finally, I will cover in more detail jean styles that are trending for fall.
Of course, the fall styles I share here on the blog are ones I feel are most wearable for everyday life! While I enjoy looking at the latest trends, I find myself personally incorporating less of them in my wardrobe each year as I get older. I know what I like and what looks the best on me. I’m sure you do too! So, don’t feel you have to wear any trend if you don’t like it.
However, I’ve found a key to looking modern while staying true to your personal style aesthetic is by adding at least a few of the latest trends you do like to your existing wardrobe. And if one or more of your personal style preferences is popular for a season or two, that’s the time to certainly make the most it!
So, here are some of the most wearable fall trends that have popped up in my research this year.
Sheer Details
It seems like we’ve been seeing sheer details on sleeves for awhile. Yet, this one for fall was mentioned in several articles I’ve read recently. Plus, a sheer sleeve is a trend most all of us can wear. I think sheer details also look very feminine and pretty around necklines like on the top pictured above.

Peplum Tops
Some lists stated peplum tops were coming back in vogue, and I did spot a few online for fall! I love the color and shape of the blouse pictured above.

Shorter Cardigans
Shorter style cardigans have been trending for several years. I thought they still deserved a top spot on this year’s trend list though. As jean and pant styles get wider, shorter and more fitted cardigan are going to be wardrobe essentials.

Trouser Pants (Classic Tailoring)
Blazers and suits for women have been a major trend in fashion for the last several years. A button down shirt is also still a big trend. I’m seeing a lot of vests too. And, trouser pants are making their way onto the fashion scene for fall. You don’t have to work in a professional setting to wear this style either if you like it. Many retailors are styling trouser pants in a casual ways like with sneakers and graphic tees.

Wide-Leg Jeans
I will have more on jean styles for fall in an upcoming post, but the most fashion forward jean trend for fall is wide-leg jeans. I admit I’m not in love with all the wide-leg styles as a petite. I think petites can wear them but finding the right fit can be a bit challenging. I’ve got some wide-leg jean options listed in the widget below, but it was difficult finding petite sizes or petite sizes well stocked in this style.
Interestingly, it’s been difficult finding wide-leg jeans in stock whatsoever for this post. I don’t know if it’s just still a little too early to be shopping for fall jeans or if they are just really that popular? Maybe, it’s some of both, but time will tell!

Patch Pockets & Cargo Pants
Designers are adding interesting pocket details this year like the patch pockets on the jeans above. Also, cargo pockets are supposed to be popular again on pants and on denim.

Denim Skirts
Another blast from the past is the resurgence of the denim skirt. These can be difficult to find in stock too. However, Dillard’s has several in stock. I’m seeing these skirts in mini, midi, and maxi styles.

Top Handle Handbags
Structured bags with top handles seem to be the biggest trend in handbags for fall. Crescent shaped bags that have been around for several years are still popular. Also, I saw that bucket bags may be making a comeback too.

Chunky Earrings
Bigger earring are trending. However, chunky earrings don’t necessarily mean huge earring which might be more appealing to those of us who are petite or just prefer something not so big. I’m seeing small to medium sized earrings that are simply more substantial looking than some of their more delicate counterparts. Here is an example a smaller, yet chunkier hoop earring. So, this is an easy trend anyone can do!

The Color Red
Finally, the biggest color trend for fall is red. My late grandmother would have loved this!! I am seeing lots of burgundy too, but true red will be the the “it” color this year in clothing and accessories.
