Hi sweet ladies! Today, I’m posting tips for covering your roots. If you were lucky, you may have gotten in to have your hair done before quarantine! Unfortunately, I did not! In fact, my hair appointment was just a few days beyond when my salon had to close – ugh!
Even though I like to blog about beauty tips and helpful beauty products here at Dressed In Faith, I am pretty low maintenance when it comes down to it. I don’t spend a huge amount for makeup and skin products. I also don’t get regular manicures, pediures, or facials.
The one thing I do spend more on and like to get done regularly is my hair. It grows very fast, so I get it trimmed every five weeks. I also get it colored to cover up my grays every five weeks too. Yet, here we are without these services! So, here are some tips to keep our hair, if we color it in the salon, looking its best.
While of course appearances are not the most important thing in the midst of all of this, you may be working from home attending meetings on zoom or still going into work. I can certainly understand wanting to keep your appearance… umm…your hair neat and presentable. Also, it just makes me feel much better to get dressed some days, put on some makeup, and see what looks like normal me in the mirror.
My first tip is for those of you who may color your hair a shade pretty close to your natural color and don’t have any grays. Count your blessings and don’t worry about those roots coming through! I wish so much that was the case for me right now!
On the other hand if you you have just a few grays along your part, try parting your hair on the other side. That may help more than you realize! I changed my part some years ago, because I was graying faster on one side than the other. Unfortunately, both sides have now caught up to each other now. Ha!
Clairol Root Touch-Up Concealing Powder Here & Here
The next thing I would try if you have just a few grays peeking through or your hair is just starting to grow out is a root touch-up concealing powder or spray. The nice thing about these products are that they are not permanent. They wash out when you shampoo.
This Clairol Root Touch-Up Powder in the medium brown worked pretty well for me in the beginning. I really prefer a powder, because I feel like it is less messy than a spray. I’ve seen some people swear by this root touch-up spray though.
Next if you hair starts to get even longer and/or you have lots of gray showing along your hairline, you might try is calling your hair salon to see if they can sell you your hair dye with instructions on how to do it yourself at home. I’ve seen where some salons are offering this to their clients.
L’OREAL Magic Root Rescue Kit | Revlon Colorsilk Permanent Hair Color
If they aren’t able to do that, you can try a permanent root touch-up kit. I picked up this L’OREAL Magic Root Rescue in a medium brown. That was the only color close to my hair color I could find locally. I never did use this one, so I cannot say how well it works.
I will say there is a bigger amount of product in the L’OREAL Magic Root Rescue kit than I expected. So if needed, you could probably cover several rows of gray. In hindsight, I probably should have tried that one, but didn’t!
Instead, I did something pretty drastic! Ha! I went with a total permanent hair color kit. Plus, I had Jeffrey carefully trim my hair! I would not necessarily recommend trying either one of these things yourself if you have never done it – I had not! LOL
I think I was having a bad moment! It was looking like we could be quarantined for many months which the future is still remains uncertain. So, I felt I would have to eventually do something drastic to my hair. Plus, I was having horrible hot flashes at the time and beyond needing a haircut which was making me even hotter!
Thankfully, it did not turn out to be a disaster but here is what I learned.
This Revlon Colorsilk kit did cover my all my grays nicely. It has a pleasant smell and comes with a fabulous conditioner. It is also very inexpensive. I probably didn’t choose the right color, because I was in a hurry. It’s not terrible, but it did turn out redder than what I normally get at the salon. You can see what it looks like now in this post.
If you get to the point where you think you just have to color your hair yourself, pick a color as close to what you already have as possible. This is not the time to try something totally different!
Definitely test a hidden strand of hair before doing your whole head! Also, buy two kits to make sure you have enough dye to cover all of your hair. Luckly, I had plenty of dye in just one Revlon Colorsilk kit to cover everything.
If you have longer hair and are determined to trim it like I did, do it before you color your hair. I colored mine before we trimmed my hair which was a big mistake. It was a mess trying to get all my strands covered, especially at the roots, under long tangled hair. I was trying to do it like my stylist does in it the salon. It’s very apparent that I am not a professional!
I did miss some spots underneath that are still a little gray. I had a big clean makeup brush that I actually used to spread the color on my roots. If I have to do this again, I think I will order this brush and mixing bowl set here.
Have you ever colored your hair at home? I would love for you to share any helpful tips! Frankly, I hope I never have to do this again though! I am so thankful for my hair stylist!!
Thank you for sharing your experience with coloring/cutting your hair. Your hair & you always look beautiful. Love how you tell about your day.
Thank you so much! I am relieved it didn’t turn out bad.
My cans of root cover up got here yesterday.I am going to go one more week before I try it. Got the spray that was what my Hair Dresser suggested. Your hair color and mine are about the same shade. Hair Dresser suggestion was light to medium brown and red or alburn. She suggested to mix spray it. Never did this before so we will see. You and your family stay safe and well.
Oh yes your hair turn out great.
Thank you Brenda! I was very nervous to color mine as I had never done anything like that before! I was also pretty nervous about letting my husband trim it too! Lol Good luck with your root spray. I’m sure it will look good!
