There is a real identity crisis in our world today of epic proportions. And each one of us needs to be careful we don’t get caught up in it too.
We often only look for our identity in our sex, race, ethnicity, lineage, our causes, and our beliefs. We find our identity in all kinds of earthly things, people, or ideas instead of the image in which the Bible says we were created. And that image is the only One that really matters – God Himself.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with feeling good about our heritage. God in His creativity also made us each unique, either man or woman, while still forming us in His image. Our causes and beliefs are not necessarily bad too, especially when used for good. Afterall, a Christian’s cause and belief is for and in Jesus Christ.
However, crisis comes when our causes and beliefs don’t line up with God’s will. There’s a problem when the fight for the cause itself becomes an idol. And there’s a disconnect when the cause becomes more important than loving and forgiving others.
There’s an identity crisis when we try to make ourselves into something God did not create us to be. Our rights or pride in who we are as men, women, or as apart of any particular group should not outweigh who we are ultimately in Christ.
I must say that I need to be remind myself each and every day of my true identity by connecting with Him who breathes precious life into me.
It’s easy to look at the lives of other women I admire and want to root my own identity in them. They may have similar interest, lifestyles, and occupations. I look to them to compare myself and measure my own life. However, when things in my life don’t measure up to theirs, I’m left in my own identity crisis.
I sometimes look only within myself to find the source of my identity. My achievements, successes and their results become tied too much to who I really am. And the next time I fail? I question my importance, self-worth, and path in life. And my confidence is often shattered.
Yet, when I look to my Creator to truly understand myself, there is no doubt, confusion, hopelessness, or feelings of worthlessness. He tells me in His Word that I’m loved, forgiven, and truly valuable in spite of failures. My confidence is restored. And I remember who I truly am.
Dear ladies, any day you are struggling to find your way, self-worth, or confidence in who you truly are. Look to your Creator. Remember how much He loves you, and who you are in Him.
