Today’s post is all about jewelry storage and organization tips. Recently, I wrote about How to Build a Jewelry Wardrobe. That post seemed to be a popular one among readers. I even had someone ask to follow up with how to properly store your jewelry. So, I wrote that idea down on the list, and here it is!
Plus, there happens to be some good sales on jewelry right now too that I will share at the end of this post! First though, let’s talk a little bit about types of jewelry and how to properly store it to keep it looking its best.
Jewelry can generally be grouped into two categories – fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. With finer jewelry, you’ll want to be even more careful with it and invest some in storing it properly. After all, you may have paid a lot of money for that precious piece, or it may be a family heirloom you want to preserve.
There are tons of options for storing fine jewelry. Yet before purchasing organizers, you”ll need to know how many pieces you own, the type of pieces (earring, necklaces, etc), sizes, and any unique care instructions for certain pieces.
If you have some silver pieces, they can tarnish easily. So, you want to store them in anti tarnish bags.
Pearls are very soft. So, you may want to store them in separate compartments of a fabric lined jewelry box or in a soft bag. In fact, a lot of nicer jewelry will come with a protective bags for storage.
Gemstones need to be stored in separate compartments too, so they don’t scratch each other. There are certain gemstone colors that are affected by sunlight. You may want to ask your jeweler if the stone you are purchasing is one of them. In that case, they would need to be stored covered and away from direct sunlight.
Diamonds are considered the hardest gemstone, but keep in mind that they still can be damaged.
As you know, necklaces and some bracelets can get tangled easily. So, it is best to close the clasps and store them separately in soft lined compartments. You can store them on a hanger. Many jewelry boxes come with hangers inside but consider the weight of the necklace. If it has a heavy pendant, hanging it can stretch out the chain or metal over time.
In general and for the best protection, fine jewelry should be stored separated in soft bags or fabric lined compartments, in a dry place, and away from the sun.

Now let’s talk about fashion jewelry. Fashion jewelry is usually less expensive and can be trendy. You may not want to invest heavily in it’s storage and organization. You can also get more creative with fashion jewelry storage. I’m sure you’ve seen lots of ideas on Pinterest!
You can buy or make your own necklace and bracelet hanger. You could use small dishes or teacups for holding and displaying your jewelry. Below, I have some more options for jewelry storage.
Of course, there are fashion jewelry pieces that can be on the pricier side of the spectrum that you may want to be more particular about when storing. You also can certainly keep finer jewelry out on a tray on your dresser – as long as its protected – if you reach for it daily. It’s really up to you, the type of piece, and how often you wear it!
