I’m following up my post on fall fashion trends with fall closet staples for 2021. This post is all about the basic wardrobe pieces I keep in my closet to create fall looks around. These closet staples are usually more classic pieces that you wear season to season, yet it’s important to take inventory of these items each year. Check for fit, wear, and tear.
Also, subtle styling differences can make some classic closet staples looked dated at some point too – and we wouldn’t want that!
Closet staples for fall can be highly individual depending on lifestyle needs, and my lifestyle is very casual. However, I try to cover all the bases in this post since most of us need some mixture of both casual and dressy clothing,
T-Shirts
As in the spring and summer, good basic tees in favorite neutral colors are staples for any fall wardrobe. They are great for layering under jackets and cardigans. I personally prefer mostly short sleeve tees for layering in the fall. They are less bulky under sweaters, and I can cool off easily if I get too hot.
Fall Blouse
I like to have several blouses with different sleeve lengths for fall to dress up with pants or down with jeans.
Sweater/Cardigan
If you’ve read my blog for a while, you know I love a great cardigan for layering in the fall. It’s also good to have a few light-weight pull over sweaters on hand.
Jeans
Since my lifestyle is casual, jeans make up a large part of my fall wardrobe. Jean styles are all over the map right now too! We are seeing looser fits, but I can’t really predict at this point which style will eventually dominate the fashion scene!
I have a mixture of skinny and straight styles in my closet. Plus, it seems like skinnies are still hanging on in popularity. If you are wanting to update your jeans this fall though, try a slim or classic straight style for an updated look. Also if you prefer how bootcut styles look on you, I’m seeing a resurgence in those too.
Pants
It’s important to have a few different pants styles when you need to wear something other than jeans. If you work in an office setting, pants may also be a bigger part of your wardrobe.
I like to keep a versatile pair of black pants in my closet and am working on finding some right now. I’ve ordered these slim pants in black and these black pants to try.
A Dress
You probably won’t find a dress as a must have on my winter wardrobe list. It can get pretty cold where I live for bare legs! However, a versatile go to dress for early fall is a great wardrobe staple.
Jacket/Blazer/Wrap
A good classic outer layer is a must have for fall, especially as it gets colder. Depending on your lifestyle, all you may need is a casual jacket. However, a classic blazer can be dressed up or down. Plus, blazers seem to be part of the trend category this fall. I’m also fond of this pretty wrap for fall too.
Mules/Flats
I have been loving the mule trend for fall but know I will need a versatile enclosed flat or loafer too once the temps cool down.
Booties
Speaking of colder temperatures, a good pair of booties is a must have in any fall closet.
Dressed in Faith
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew6:33
Thank you for this post! You may think it is basic, but it really helps me to know where to start. I have a very casual lifestyle, but like to “level up” when I go shopping, meet a friend for lunch, or go to Bible Study or church. So encouraging for me to see that I only need a couple things to be ready for fall.
So glad it was helpful! I almost added joggers and sneakers to the list, but I’m like you. I need a few things aside from the casual for church and outings.
