Today, I have an easy way to find your perfect wardrobe colors! When it comes to fashion today, there are no hard and fast rules. I always want to encourage you to dress in styles and colors that make you feel beautiful and comfortable! Yet, I also know how hard it can be to decide on color when building a workable wardrobe. Sometimes, I get stuck not knowing what colors to choose. How about you?
If you face the same dilemma, there is an easy method or test for finding which colors should look best on you. This test helped point me in the right direction, and I hope it’s helpful for you!
If you are reading today and already confident about your best color choices, don’t despair if this little test tells you something different. As I said above, keep dressing in what you like and makes you feel best. This is just a guide for those of us who might be stumped or need a little direction. In fact, some of my preferred color choices don’t follow this rule whatsoever! I will give examples later in this post.
Also, some of you may have had your colors done professionally. If so, that’s awesome! Again, I’m keeping this post pretty simple since I’m not professionally trained in color analysis. This test is just meant to provide a good starting point.
The Test
Look at the veins on the back of your wrists in bright natural light such as near a window on a sunny day. What color would you say your veins are?
If they look blue or purple, you have cool skin undertones. Your skin may have a blue, red, or pink cast underneath. Your best colors to wear are blue, purple, and green. Neutral colors that look good on you may be black or grey. Silver jewelry looks best with your skin tone.

If your veins look green, you have warm skin undertones. Your skin may have a golden or yellow cast underneath. Your best colors to wear are red, orange, and yellow. Brown and beige are good neutral colors for you. Gold jewelry looks best on you.

If you see both blue and green, you have a neutral skin undertone and are very lucky. Both outfits above will look good on you!
I have cool skin undertones. That is why you will see me wearing a lot of jewel tone colors. Sometimes when I’ve done this test, I’ve kind of over analyzed what I’m seeing. So even though I felt like I had that classic pink or red undertone indicating I’m a cool, I sought a second opinion from a trusted source – a sales lady who works at my local Clinique makeup counter. She pretty much gets it right every time when helping me match foundation shades to my skin tone. She verified I am a cool.
This is the next thing I would suggest if you are unsure. Consult with someone who works behind a makeup counter and has picked out products that match your skin tone well to see what your true undertones are!
While I do love cool colors and pick those to wear the majority of the time, there are some warm colors and prints that I love to wear as well. For instance, I love leopard print! I will wear it in brown shades despite the fact that brown falls into the warm category.
Another exception is that I like the color red too.
If there are colors you like but feel aren’t flattering, you can try wearing them in patterns so they don’t stand out so strong, in items that are away from your face, or in accessories. Also, experiment with different shades of those colors. For instance, some greens are blue-green (a cooler tone) and others are more yellow-green (a warmer tone).
The last exception I have is with jewelry color. I love gold jewelry and usually buy it first. Maybe, silver looks better on me?? Honestly, I really don’t have an opinion. In the end, I just go with what I like and makes me happy!
I love this simple test! I had my colors done years ago and it determined I have cool undertones. I wear lots of greens, blues, pinks and purples. I do wear orange and red but I make sure they have cool undertones. I have to be really careful about yellows…and Now that I don’t dye my hair ( with red shades)- brown. I do like to wear olive and rust in the fall especially, but again, it doesn’t always look the best since I have let my hair go natural and it’s salt and pepper. I used to wear lots of gold jewelry, but my mom always said once a lady starts having age spots, silver looks better so I do wear mostly silver, pewter, and white gold as it brightens my skin. Thanks!
