Today, I want to discuss how to pick out a winter coat. If you are like me, winter outerwear is usually the last thing you may think about purchasing. I honestly would not mind if I never had to put on a heavy winter coat. The reality is that winter can be a long and cold season where I live, so having a good coat or two is necessary.
I don’t buy a new coat every winter, so I consider three basic things when looking for a new coat – my budget, style and/or type of coat, and color.
First, I try to shop for the best quality coat I can find within my budget. Since this is a purchase I don’t make very often, I want it to last! Plus, my coats seem to often take a beating depending on weather conditions. Otherwise, since I only own a couple of heavy coats, they get lots of wear and tear.
This time of year is a great time to shop for a good quality new coat. Even though it’s still early in the season, you can find a lot of coats on sale after the Christmas holiday. My red peacoat is currently marked down under $95 and comes in some great colors.
Another thing I look for in a new coat is classic styling. I want to invest in something that is timeless if I plan to wear it for a lot of winter seasons.
I usually keep at least two types of winter coats in my closet – a wool blend coat that I can wear over dressy or casual outfits and a super warm casual coat that will stand up to rain or snow such as a puffer coat.
Something else to consider when it comes to styling is what length you prefer. I love the look of a long classic coat, but I tend to go shorter since I’m not very tall. I feel like I’m able to move more freely in a shorter length coat too. On the other hand if I lived in an extremely cold climate or knew I would be spending more time outside, I might look for a long petite-friendly coat.
The last big thing I think carefully about when purchasing a new winter coat is color and/or pattern. I usually tend to play it very safe with solid neutral colored coats, but decided to branch out a bit with the red coat above. If you love a particular color and it is a color that you gravitate toward often when purchasing clothes, I say go for it!
The same can be said for a classic pattern. I’ve seen some really pretty plaid coats this year. The right multicolored plaid in your favorite colors should look great with most everything in your closet.

I love the the black and white grid patterned coat above – so chic! It would go with any and everything. It also comes in some other patterns and colors.
The faux suede tan coat above is the same brand as this coat in this post that I’ve had for years.
